Tank thanks

Posted by chluaid - June 1st, 2008

I feel honoured, blown away, light-headed, nauseous and proud to have taken the first NG tank for Waterlollies. If it weren't for Newgrounds I've no doubt I'd still be working in a studio churning out crap.

Everyone who has congratulated, commented and shown their support for the win, I truly appreciate it and this has inspired me to make more Brackenwood shorts in Flash (I had previously said that Waterlollies was the last Flash Brackenwood).

Ever since I submitted hitchHiker there has been a feeling in certain people that, having professional experience in animation, I should somehow be disqualified from the site. This seems to intensify whenever I win a daily, monthly and now annual.

In the beginning of my time here on NG, I was mortified that a handful of people felt this way so I spoke with Tom about retiring some of my movies. He convinced me that the community benefits from having high quality submissions (whether from professional or maverick) as it helps everyone lift their game a notch or two.

I don't think I've ever responded to the people who think I shouldn't be here, but here's what I have to say:

---

Short Version: I developed my skills in my own time. Disney hired me because of this.

---

Long version: My skills weren't handed to me on a plate at some elite studio. I only have a high school education which meant I worked in kitchens, factories and farms. In my free time though (every day after work and entire weekends), I worked my arse off to improve my drawing skill. I had big dreams of becoming a famous comic book artist, just like many people here have their own big dreams of becoming highly skilled animators.

I was employed by Disney only because I had worked hard to improve. If I had never worked on my skills on my own time, I never would have been employed by Disney, it's that simple.

When I was at the studio, I was an inbetweener (the starting point for a career in animation). I desperately wanted to become a character animator.. I did loads of tests to prove myself but they were rejected and I wasn't accepted. Meaning? I had to improve first.

I had also done some tests for effects animation and the FX supervisor was impressed with my test. So once accepted, I worked hard in order to graduate from the 3 month probationary training period.

Much of this work was in my own time. Whenever I was on holiday or just a day trip to the mountains or something, everyone else would be enjoying the sights while I'd be taking photos and video of water, wind, fire or smoke. My hard work paid off and I graduated from training. Once out of training though, every drawing, every scene and every day was a battle to prove that I was improving. Stagnation means you're out.

Finally, I WANT to be here and the numbers (and awards) tell me that most people want me here. Numbers aside, it's the best thing in the world for me to see someone else's work who has been inspired by my own and any of my characters making cameos in other people's films. I love helping people improve and offering advice (which admittedly is almost impossible to do 1-on-1 nowadays) and I will always be completely willing to help people get up to and beyond their goal standard.

You cannot fail if you can commit your life to your craft. I haven't stopped drawing or thinking about drawing for most of my life and as a result I landed a dream job where I was paid, not to sit back and go 'aaaah', but paid to improve.

You can do that too.

As a final thought, I was never a professional background artist, storyboard artist, layout artist or character animator. These are also skills I taught myself and am still working on improving.

You are currently the best animator in NG so keep making your stuff because I know even the people that are jealous are learning from you so don't stop teaching all of us. And congratulations on winning the first ever NG tank Award you totally deserved it and I knew you were going to win since you got nominated :D

Congratulations on your great accomplishment! You deserve it!

I want become at least good as you. Or appreciated. Where is the difference?
When this summer will come i will work hard to edit my series. My fear is that I will be too lazy.
So you take photoes of water to make it look so good ? Interesting...
Congrats you deserve it, even if Waterlollies wasn't the best short of the Brackenwood series.

Building a reference library of memories, images, video, etc is a vital part of being an artist, so I take photos of water and other effects in order to study it. Then when it comes time to animate those effects, I have a bank of knowledge in my brain about how the effect works. It's the same deal with drawing. When you don't have a pencil in your hand, you should be constantly studying real life and observing. When it comes time to draw, you have memories (and sometimes photos/video) of how stuff should look.

Congratulations on the tank awards, yours was the best. Maybe negativeONE should've put Bitey in NG rumble. I had no idea that Waterlollies was supposed to be the last one! So I was checking your post for new animations like every week, and now you tell me! Brackenwood was one of my favorite series on this site, along with Madness and Tankmen and Xombie and some others. I hope to see more from you, mostly Brackenwood!

Reading this it has truly inspired me to work harder to achieve my goal of being even a 10th as good as you. (Though I am a stop-motion animator myself, but still the same game in a way right? =D)

Congrats on winning the award, can't really name anybody more deserving.

Drawing, painting, sculpting, stop-motion, 2D, 3D.. all of us are artists who benefit from a life-long commitment to improvement, so good luck with your stuff :D

Anyway, congrats on the award. Thought I'd ask, do you have an idea of what general time your next animation will be released? Any awesome images hinting at the theme? Looking forward to it.

I couldn't say when the next Brackenwood would be released. It's only a recent decision to continue making them with Flash. Probably will post an Alpha when the time gets closer.

Lol at squeaky for attempting damage control after putting his own foot up his ass.

lmao ^

I really love watching your movies. It may sound lame, but it kind of puts me in this place when I'm watching them. I don't know how to explain it, sorry.

Congratulations on the award!

you definately deserved that NG tank award! congrats!

I Agree
But I Think Your Story proves EVERYONE can Improve
Well Done

Cheers

you should totally try something dialogue based...the voiced characters in your "30 movies in one month" were great.

thanks! Yeah hitchHiker2 was a lot of fun too, both in terms of writing and acting the dialogue but it wasn't exactly dialogue based. I have written test dialogue scenes for the Brackenwood feature and my co-writer said they were good so I hope to stretch my legs a bit more in this area.

Way to go! Don't let the radical minority tell you what to do. :)

Your work has always wowed me and I'm glad to be able to watch your movies on Newgrounds whenever I want: I love the fluid and flawless animation, a wonderful assortment of characters, fun stories and great, original music as well.

That's just wonderful that you got hired by Disney and you didn't let some rejections shut you down. I hope, one of these days, I may get my dream job as well.

Congratulations for winning the 1st Newgrounds Tank Award for Animation! I look forward to your next Portal entries. :)

Hey Adam Phillips.

I would like to say that I have always enjoyed your animations and even my family have, it was the second thing I ever saw on newgrounds so I was extremely impressed. However I might add that, for instance the Yu-Yu lacks a story and this really does bring it down.

But after watching hitchiker I would have to say this is one of your best works, well done to all you have achieved and the tank award. I have a few technical questions to ask you:

- do you use paintbrush or pencil in flash.
- What level of smoothing do you use because I usualy have paintbrush at about 50 with second smallest paintbrush size and it comes out really blotchy and not smooth at all.
- what frame rate do you animate in.
- do you do it all fbf and then tween or just comepletely fbf?

Thanks again.

Kind regards -
Sirtom93.

-paint brush 100%
-smoothing set to 20 whilst drawing, but I then optimise after the drawing is painted
-the Brackenwood shorts are mostly 30fps, the exceptions are Bingbong (20fps) and Waterlollies (25fps)
-FbF about 95%.. camera simulations like scrolling or zooming backgrounds are tweened of course and certain other effects have tweened elements.

Congratulations on winning the 1st NG Tank Award for Animation! :) You more than earned it, if you ask me. I look forward to your future projects. :)

Congratulations on the tank award, you certainly deserve it. It's also very impressive that you developed the skills you have at animating in your own time.

congrats man u deserve it

Every now and then I go "man that ain't quite fair that he's a professional" but then I remember that newgrounds is everything by EVERYONE. congrats man, you earned it, although I was a little disappointed with waterlollies since I was expecting more of a YuYu type of action.

thanks man :)
I try to do something different in every Brackenwood movie so I think everyone's going to have their favourites and not-so-favourites. That's perfectly fine by me and while I would like every one of them to be perfect stories with perfect animation, I'm happy to leave them as a marker of my skill level at a particular time in my career (that's why you'll find all my oldest shittiest Flash shorts on my site.. I never re-release 'improved' movies).

Hey where are you from, by the way?

Sydney Australia

You sir are one of the best animators to ever submit to this site! Congats on the award and may you continue to blow us all away with your inspired fash.

Congratulations. We do want you here.

Btw, about that Brackenwood movie:
is there any chance for it to get a threatical release?

that's the plan :)
